Virtualisation

What is Virtualisation?

In its most popular form, virtualisation involves running multiple virtual operating systems on a server.  This means an organisation or your IT manager can reduce the amount of physical servers required and benefit from reduced server spend, power consumption and maintenance.   However, virtualisation can be extended beyond servers and can be applied to all layers of your ICT environment from the data centre, storage, applications to the desktop PC.

As virtualisation spreads throughout different layers of the ICT environment, the ability to manage it all becomes a key component to a successful virtualisation solution. Vendors such as Microsoft and Citrix now provide a comprehensive management solution that reduces complexity, ensures uniform policy application, and streamlines maintenance.

What are the benefits of Virtualisation?

A well-designed and managed virtualisation strategy delivers value to the organisation in three ways:

  • Controls Costs
Lower costs, reduce hardware footprint, and minimise utilities cost through server consolidation.

  • Improve Security and Availability
Reduce impact of disruptive events and streamline maintenance and disaster recovery to maximise system availability and ensure business continuity.

  • Increase Agility
Facilitate dynamic resource allocation and streamline workload provisioning to support changing needs.
