Mobile Working: Security on the move
May 15th 2014
Read John Bergin’s contributions to an article on Mobile Working entitled ‘Security on the move’ published recently in the Sunday Business Post Connected Magazine.
Alex Meehan reports,
Productivity gains and the ability to have a fast and reactive workforce responding quickly to market conditions are undoubtedly useful, but with this convenience comes potential risk.
‘'With smartphones and tablets, the more functionality and features you put on them, the more of a security implication there can be, said John Bergin, managing director of IT Force. ‘Obviously larger companies that have an IT security function within their own IT departments can handle this problem more easily and they will have enough users that it is worth their while to manage this properly.
Larger SMEs will likewise probably have someone capable of making sure the right security measures are in place. However, this doesn't describe the majority of Irish companies, said Bergin.
‘When you come to the small business which doesn't have any in-house IT capability, then their protection will likely only be as good as that offered as standard by whoever their service provider is, he said.
For this reason, Bergin believes that smaller companies should be much more security conscious when it comes to shopping around for IT partners.
‘If you are an SME, the first thing to do is get yourself a good partner that you can work with. A lot of people focus on should I buy Android or should I buy iPhone or should I buy whatever?' he said.
'But that's not the most important question. And, to be honest, if you are in business as an accountant or a solicitor, why are you trying to make decisions about IT security? Don't reinvent the wheel - focus your attention on your core activities and go find the most relevant, highest quality partner you can. Buy that expertise in like a utility. You wouldn't try to represent yourself in court or prepare your company accounts yourself, so why do this yourself?
