John Bergin recently spoke to journalist Leslie Faughnan on the topic of Managed IT Services for SMEs. The subsequent article ‘Take a look around' was published in the Sunday Business Post Connected Magazine on the 1st of November. Finding a broad variety of top-end service providers close to home is fairly easy.
There is almost no element of ICT that cannot be procured in Ireland today as a managed service, from backup to full disaster recovery and business continuity solutions, from email to hosted applications and data.
IT Force is an indigenous MSP that offers a full range of ICT, very much including all forms of cloud service. ‘As far as cloud is concerned, we are an experienced MSP with some depth in skills and yet we are learning and indeed changing all the time,’ said managing director John Bergin.
‘Cloud is evolving, rapidly, there is a real challenge in keeping up. So it is hardly surprising that it is beyond the in-house competence of even larger organisations much less SMEs. Yet smaller businesses in Ireland, where our general scale is small by international standards, have just as much ambition and need to be smart and ahead of the competition in their sectors as in any market anywhere.’
When cloud service for business got started first, things like email and backup were the relatively simple offerings, Bergin said.
‘Today you have everything from telephony and universal communications to data storage, to enterprise applications, to infrastructure, to hosted desktop or managed mobility solutions. There are security services from firewalls and encryption to two-factor authentication. Office 365 is a set of applications that is experiencing huge take-up because it does work well and is good value.’
Client requirements vary greatly, he said. ‘We have some clients which were literally born in the cloud and are working away very happily because they can switch on or off, up or down, flex as it suits. One of them came to us as a start-up but is now passing the 40-user mark, so they are not all tiny.
‘Security is still a big issue in cloud and with some justification,’ he said. ‘It is in fact a major part of the business case for a managed service rather than going it alone. In some respects cloud is no more unsafe than using the internet generally — and often more secure because the services are professional. But any organisation will normally be using a mix of services and legacy and networks and devices and so on. Security is a key component demanding expertise and experience.’
