When IAAS Really Makes Sense

Irish IT services companies are expanding their managed services to incorporate the cloud.
Ian Campbell of the Sunday Business Post, reports
Speaking to Joe Molloy, the director of managed services for IT Force, he had no doubt that cloud adoption will gather pace, but was keen to stress that it was not the only show in town and unlikely to be for some considerable time. He was pragmatic and saw the cloud as another managed service option.
"We support whatever environment is out there," he said. "Historically it has been on-premise where we make sure the applications run and the security patches are up to date. Now there happen to be more options but we don't really mind what platform it's on."
IT Force will advise and recommend, but the decision is ultimately down to the customer. If they want infrastructure to be more efficient and highly available, ticking boxes for compliance and business continuity built in, then the conversation usually turns to the cloud and IaaS.
Molloy works a lot with the small firm community who are not always interested in the benefits the cloud bestows. "Talk to your average 25-user company about agility and the ability to scale up and there's no interest. They're just trying to stay alive. But we've also worked with start-ups that had business plans and schedules for hiring people. There the cloud makes perfect sense. It's all about where you are at," he said.
